PostSubject: 6 speed conversion   Mon May 10, 2010 10:25 am

I'm doing a 6 speed manual transmission conversion on my 99 Grand Prix GTP. Thought I would mention it here.

http://picasaweb.google.com/pontiacracecar/GTP6SpeedConversion

The transmission I am using is meant for a Pontiac G6 which is a similar horsepower & weight car. My car has the 3800 series II supercharged motor. Turns out it has the same bellhousing pattern as the 3900 found in the G6 GTP 06/07.

Really the only part I am waiting on at the moment is a custom drive axle. I need to take measurements and find somewhere to send it to have one fabricated. Other than that, I have someone's welder hooked up and "tested" -- that was fun -- and I already had the other required tools such as grinder, engine lift, air tools, engine stand etc.

I have to cut into the body of the car for fitment (scary but it's not exactly a stock application to begin with), and I need to fabricate 4 mounting brackets. The rest is worked out.

It will be fun for sure, especially if my other plan goes into play, which is to weld a dirtbike carrier on the back of this bad boy!

The whole album is up above. It won't let me insert individual photos very easily. I'm continuing to add photos as I get further into it.

When I'm done, I will probably make a guide of part #s, fabrication templates, etc for other Grand Prix people wanting to do this mod. The GTP model is really popular with lots of websites and vendors still dedicated to it.

The conversion I'm doing is fairly involved, expensive, not perfect results exactly, but should be reliable when finished.

Getting closer! I made one of the transmission mounts and I started mounting the shifter and hand brake. This car originally had a foot brake so this is turning out to be interesting.

My first attempt at welding:

It's gasless mig and the weld has already been cleaned up quite a bit. That side I was having trouble with the wire feeding inconsistently. Then I made a pressure adjustment on the roller. The bead on the other side is about as wide as my finger lol

I was getting adequate melting but not much for style points Razz

Yeah I hear you Mark. I have a gasless mig and it is definately different that anything else that I have welded with too. However, once you get the hang of it you can put down a nice bead.
